Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003) Movie Review

 BACKGROUND
What is that you hear? It is but the sweet sounds of the great Daft Punk! The group that brought House music into the mainstream and the overall Badasses who brought us the awesome soundtrack to 2010's Tron Legacy! Well it may be surprising to know that they have actually worked with legendary anime company Toei animation under the supervision of the awesome Leiji Matsumoto.  The concept behind this project was to be Daft Punk's 2003 album Discovery form beginning to end done with coinciding animation and what we got was a film that is a treat to the eyes as it is to the ears.

PLOT (taken from IMDB)
An unscrupulous music executive and his flunky kidnap an alien, blue-skinned techno band, rob them of their identities, pass them off as human, and foist them on an unsuspecting public on Earth. After their arrival and their impact on the human population, the members of the band try to piece back their identities, escape from the clutches of the evil music executive, and return to their own world.

REVIEW
As a fan of Daft Punk and this album I have to say without a question of a doubt this movie is incredible. Within its short run time (seriously it is barely an hour) it is able to tell an epic story while keeping the audience engaged without needing many sound effects and without the use of dialogue.  The whole story is to be interpreted by what the audience sees on the screen and hears with the music.  It is also surprisingly moving at times.  It is always great to remember that in film stories can be told without the use of dialogue and often what you see is much more moving than what a character might say. The animation in this film is also quite striking.  The music video at the top of this page is the first couple of minutes in the film and as you can see everything in this film is animated in a bright and vibrant manner that really suits Daft Punk's style. Each of the character feels very distinct and even Daft Punk themselves are animated into the film in one particular scene.

If you are not a fan of Daft Punk's music you will probably not like this movie but if you are (you are damn awesome) then this film will be right up your alley.  I don't have very much problems with this film other than there are some slow parts but even then the animation is so beautiful that those parts don't even really matter because you are sucked in to see what happens next.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
I loved every second of this movie! It is not for everyone but it is able to reach its target audience splendidly. I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves badass music and anime!

SCORE
4.5 out of 5
